How to opt out of the beta experience for Dropbox for macOS

To opt out of the beta experience for Dropbox for macOS and revert your Dropbox account to its previous configuration:

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in the menu bar.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Under the General tab, click Leave beta experience.
  5. Click Leave beta.

Note: If you are using Dropbox Backup or External Drive Backup, you must follow the instructions at the end of this article to opt out of the beta experience (early releases).

Your Dropbox folder will be accessible under Favorites in the Finder window. If you’re on a paid Dropbox plan, your files will start out as online-only. You can make files available offline by right clicking the file and selecting Make available offline. Any files that were not synced prior to leaving the beta experience will be stored in your ~/Library/CloudStorage folder for future access.

How to access files that were not synced

To access your ~/Library/CloudStorage folder:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. From the menu bar (at the top of the screen), click Go.
  3. Hold the Option key and click Library.
  4. Open the CloudStorage folder.

Any files not synced prior to leaving the beta experience will be automatically stored in an archive folder (EX: Dropbox (4-25-22 3:00 PM) Archive).

How to opt out of the beta experience for macOS as an External Drive Backup or Computer Backup user

If you are using Dropbox Backup or External Drive Backup, you must opt out of all early releases to leave the beta experience for Dropbox for macOS.

To opt out of early releases:

  1. Log in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Under Preferences in the General tab, toggle off Early releases.
  5. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner.
  6. Click Sign out.
  7. Close the Dropbox desktop app.
    • Click the Dropbox icon in the menu bar.
    • Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner.
    • Click Quit.
  8. Open the Applications folder in Finder.
  9. Click the Dropbox icon and drag to the trashcan in your dock.
  10. Download and install the latest version of Dropbox.

Once Dropbox has been installed, you can log back into your account. At this point, the local files from your previous Dropbox sessions will be archived and stored in your ~/Library/CloudStorage folder for future access.
