You can search for content in your Dropbox account by name, file extension (for example, .docx or .xslx), a person who edited the content, what folder it is located in, and content type (for example, Document or Image files).
Search files and folders
To search your content on dropbox.com or the Dropbox desktop app:
- Sign in to dropbox.com or open the Dropbox desktop app.
- Click the search bar.
- Type the term you’d like to search for.
- Press Enter.
To search your content on the Dropbox mobile app:
- Open the Dropbox mobile app.
- Tap the search icon (magnifying glass).
- Type the term you’d like to search for.
Notes:
- If you have a Plus, Family, Professional, or Business account, you can also search the contents of your files.
- If you have a Professional or Business account, you can also search images in your Dropbox account based on the content in them.

Filter your search results
You can filter your search results by person, folder, and content type.
To filter by person, start typing the name or email address of the person you wish to filter by, and click their name from the dropdown that appears. You will see a list of all files that person has edited and you have access to, ordered by most recently edited.
To filter by a specific folder or content type, click the dropdown next to Any folder or By type on the search results page.
Preview a file from your search results
To see more information about a file in your search results, including a thumbnail preview, click the checkbox beside the file. You can see thumbnail previews for most file types you can preview in Dropbox, except for audio files.
