How to manage Dropbox Backup

This article describes a feature available to customers on all Dropbox plans.

You can manage your backups, including viewing the contents, progress, and history of your backups, skipping files, modifying which folders are backed up, and more.

To manage your backups:

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
  2. Click the Sync and Backups tab.
  3. Select the backup you’d like to manage. 

     

From the Dropbox Backup window, you can:

  • Click View backed up files to open a browser window and see all files and folders in that backup.
  • Click View status to see the live progress of that backup.
  • Click View history to see the version history for that backup.
  • Click Skip files to open a File Explorer or Finder window and select a file to exclude from syncing (computer only).
    • This feature is not available on the updated Dropbox Backup.
  • Click Rewind backup to restore a previous version of your backup.            
    • Dropbox Rewind is not available to users on Dropbox Basic. 
    • This feature is not available on the updated Dropbox Backup.
  • Click Choose folders to change the folders you’d like to back up (computer only). 
  • Click Delete to turn off your computer or external hard drive backup.
  • Click View deleted files to open a browser window and recover recently deleted files.



To manage your backups with the updated Dropbox Backup:

Note: With the updated Dropbox Backup, backups from other devices will only be accessible from the web.

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
  2. Click the Sync and Backups tab.
  3. Select the backup you’d like to manage on the left.
    • Click View backed up files to open a browser window and see all files and folders in that backup.
    • Click View status to see the live progress of that backup.
      • Note: You can also see the status of your backup under the backup name at the top of the window. You’ll see [x]% backed upDonePausedBackups pausedErrorPartially doneUnplugged, or Stopped. Hover over the status to see more information.
    • Click Choose folders to change the folders you’d like to back up (computer only).
    • Click Rename to change the name of your backups.
    • Click View deleted files to restore previous versions of selected folders within Backup.
      • Rewind is not available on the updated Dropbox Backup.
    • Click Delete backup to turn off your computer or external hard drive backup.
    • Click View deleted files to see files deleted within the past 30 days.

Note: Viewing your storage space is available only on Dropbox Basic, Plus, and Professional.
