The information in this article applies to Dropbox users on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, and macOS 10.13, 10.14, and 10.15.

Starting October 2025, Dropbox will no longer support the full desktop experience on the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7, 8, 8.1
  • macOS 10.13, 10.14, 10.15

Users running on the above operating systems will be transitioned to a simplified version of the Dropbox desktop app. This update is part of our ongoing efforts to optimize performance and security at Dropbox.

The simplified version of the Dropbox desktop app

The new simplified version of the Dropbox desktop app is designed to provide extended support to older operating systems while allowing you to have a more efficient experience.

With the new simplified version of the Dropbox desktop app, you’ll still have access to Dropbox core features, like syncing and sharing files, but the following advanced options will no longer be available:

  • Automatic backup: Setting up new computer or external drive backups, adjusting backup settings, or restoring backup content from your desktop. Learn more about Dropbox backup.
  • Dropbox badge: Microsoft Office file conflicts will no longer be flagged in real time. Learn more about the Dropbox badge.
  • Editing screenshots: You won’t be able to add text, shapes, or drawings to screenshots before sharing them.
  • Encrypted folders: To access your encrypted folders you’ll have to use Dropbox on the web.
  • Help: Getting guided help with sync issues or managing storage in the Manage hard drive space panel.
  • Images, photos, and videos: Images, photos and videos from connected devices won’t be automatically detected or uploaded in the desktop app.
  • Sharing: To share a file or folder you’ll now be redirected to Dropbox on web.

Your content is safely stored in your Dropbox account, and you can still access all your files on your desktop, on the Dropbox mobile apps on Android and iOS, and on dropbox.com.
