How to search the contents of your files on

If you're a Dropbox Plus, Family, Professional, or Business user, you have access to a feature called full-text search, which can find files by filename, extension, or keyword within the file.

To search the content of your file:

  1. Sign in to
  2. Type the keyword or file extension you’re looking for in the search bar.
  3. Press Enter.

Files that contain the keyword you searched for will appear and display a text snippet to show where in the file the keyword is located.

Note: This feature is only available in certain languages. If your search results don't include file content, then the feature isn't yet available in your language.

What file types are searchable?

Dropbox can search the contents of the following file types:





Paper docs (.paper)






Paper templates (.papert)








Can I search text within images?

This feature (automatic image text recognition) is available to Dropbox Professional and Business customers. 

Users with automatic image text recognition can search English text within images including .gif, .jpg, .pdf, .png, and .tiff files.

This includes images that are pictures of a document (like a receipt) and .pdf documents created by scanners and fax machines.
