What's a Dropbox file case conflict?

Updated Nov 16, 2023

A case conflict happens when you name a file or folder with the same name as a file or folder in the same location, but with different upper-case and lower-case letters. For example, two files named “records” and “Records”.

Although you can store these two files in the same place on dropbox.com, you can’t store them in the same place in the Dropbox folder on Windows, Mac, and other file systems. Instead, one will be appended with the words (Case Conflict).

What do I do now?

If one of your files is appended with the words (Case Conflict), you can resolve it with either of the following options:

  • Simply leave both files or folders alone, and let one continue to have the name appended with (Case Conflict)
  • Rename one of the files or folders

How can I prevent a case conflict from happening again?

If you’d like to avoid case conflicts in the future, don’t create a file or folder with the same name as a file or folder in the same location, even if it has different upper-case and lower-case letters.
