What are monthly licenses?
Monthly licenses let you add team members to your existing annual plan and pay for those additional seats per month.
This feature is only available to new members whose email domain doesn’t match the email domain of any team admin.
With monthly licenses:
- Your base plan is billed per year.
- Additional licenses added during the year are billed per month.
- You can add members without committing to a full-year cost for each new seat.
When monthly licenses are used
Monthly licenses allow you to purchase licenses on a monthly basis instead of a yearly basis.
This means:
- Any new members you add during your current billing period may be billed per month.
- Your original licenses remain billed per year.
- You can still add monthly or yearly licenses at any time.
How to add a license with monthly billing
- Log in to dropbox.com with your admin credentials.
- Click Admin console in the left sidebar.
- Click Members.
- Click Invite Members.
- Enter the new team member’s email address, then click Next.
- Choose folders to share, then click Next.
- Select Monthly, then click Buy now.
- Click Done.
The new member will show Monthly in the Role column on the Members page. You can also filter by License type: Monthly to find these members.
How to remove a monthly license
You can remove monthly licenses the same way you remove members with yearly licenses.
When you remove a member with a monthly license:
- The seat is removed immediately.
- You’ll receive a prorated refund fo the remaining time in the current billing period.

How to view billing details for monthly licenses
- Log in to dropbox.com with your admin credentials.
- Click Admin console in the left sidebar.
- Click Billing.
- Under Upcoming charges, view your next billing date. Monthly charges are labeled “monthly.”
You can also view billing details in the Dashboard under Billing.
What to expect
If you’re part of this beta:
- Newly added licenses may be billed per month.
- Existing licenses remain billed per year.
- At your renewal date, you’ll receive a single charge that includes:
- Your yearly plan renewal.
- Any monthly charges for additional licenses for that billing period.
- Billing details may appear differently on your invoice or billing page.
Things to keep in mind
- Monthly licenses apply only to additional seats, not your base plan.
- This feature is only available to members whose email domain doesn’t match the email domain of any team admin.
- Monthly licenses can be removed at any time, with immediate seat removal and a prorated refund for unused time.
- This feature is in beta and may change.
- Not all teams have access to this feature.
