How do I turn the Dropbox badge on or off in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel?

This article only applies to users who are using the Dropbox badge, and haven’t enabled Microsoft co-authoring. If you’ve enabled co-authoring, the badge will no longer appear.

Note: When you open a Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel file saved in your Dropbox account, the Dropbox badge appears on the right side of your screen. This is different to the Dropbox icon in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).

Turn on the Dropbox badge

To enable the Dropbox badge:

  1. Click  (Dropbox) in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
  2. Click the round account menu. Depending on your account, this may appear as your profile photo, your initials, or a person icon. 
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click the dropdown next to Dropbox badge and select Always show or Show only if other's present.

Can't find Preferences on the Dropbox desktop app?

When you open the Dropbox desktop app, click the round account menu to access Preferences. Depending on your account, this may appear as your profile photo, your initials, or a person icon.

Turn off the Dropbox badge

To disable the Dropbox badge:

  1. Click  (Dropbox) in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
  2. Click the round account menu. Depending on your account, this may appear as your profile photo, your initials, or a person icon.
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click the dropdown next to Dropbox badge and select Never show.

When you first see the Dropbox badge, a greeting notification appears. To dismiss this notification, you can either click on the badge or complete the "Learn More" tutorial.
