How to link or unlink a device

When you download the Dropbox application (mobile app or desktop application) on your device and log in, that device is linked to your account.

Note: A device is not linked if you logged in to dropbox.com in the web browser, but not into the application.

Basic users have a limit of three linked devices.

Where can I view a list of my linked devices?

To view a list of your linked devices from dropbox.com:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your profile picture (or grey circle) in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click the Security tab.
  5. Your linked devices are listed under Devices.

How do I unlink a device from my Dropbox account?

To unlink a device from your Dropbox account:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your profile picture (or grey circle) in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click the Security tab.
  5. Your linked devices are listed under Devices.
  6. Click the X next to the device you’d like to unlink.

To delete the Dropbox folder and synced files from a device instead, you can remote wipe the device.

What happens when a device is unlinked?

Once you unlink a device, you can easily link it again by signing back in to the Dropbox application on that device.

If you unlink a computer from your Dropbox account:

  • You will be signed out of the Dropbox application on that device
  • The Dropbox folder and any files that were synced locally will remain on the device, but changes to them from your Dropbox account will no longer sync
  • Any files that were set as online-only (using the Smart Sync feature) won’t open on the device

If you unlink a mobile device from your Dropbox account:

  • You will be signed out of the Dropbox app on that device, so any offline files can’t be opened
