How to use templates in Dropbox Paper

You can create templates for Dropbox Paper for regularly used doc formats, such as project plans or design briefs.

How to create a template

To create a Dropbox Paper template:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. On the left-side column, click Paper
  3. Click Create new doc, or open a doc you want to templatize.
  4. In your doc, click the “ (ellipsis) icon.
  5. Click Templatize.
  6. A template is generated from your doc. You'll see an option to Archive or Keep the original.

How to open and edit your templates

To open and edit your templates:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. On the left-side column, click Paper
    • If you don’t see Paper, it means you’re using the 2020 release of Dropbox Paper. Instead, you can find your template in the folder you stored it in or by using the search bar
  3. Click Create with templates.
  4. Hover over the template you want to edit and click the pencil icon.

How to use a template

To use a template on dropbox.com:

  1. Open the template you’d like to use.
  2. Click Use template.

To use a template on your iOS phone or tablet:

  1. Open the Paper mobile app.
  2. Click the pencil icon.
  3. Select the template you want to use.
  4. You now have a new doc based on your template. 

How to share a template

You can invite people to your template from the template editor. Click Share and invite people like you would to a Paper doc.

If you give someone edit access, they can make updates to the template. Editors and viewers of a template can see the template in their template library.

How to add a template to a folder

You can add a template to a folder the same way you add any Paper doc to a folder.

How to archive or delete a template

To archive or delete a Dropbox Paper template:

  1. Open the template you’d like to archive or delete.
  2. Click the “” (ellipsis) icon from inside the template.
  3. Click Archive or Delete.

You need to have edit access to a template to archive or delete that template.
