How to add a watermark to your photos in Dropbox

Watermarking is way to safeguard your images or PDFs from being downloaded and used without your permission.

To add a watermark to an image or PDF file in your Dropbox account:

  1. Sign in to
  2. Open the preview of the file you want to add a watermark to.
  3. Click the ... (ellipsis) icon.
  4. Click Enable watermarking.
  5. Click Apply Watermark.
  6. Click Save as copy or Overwrite this file
    • Save as copy will create a watermarked copy of the file with (Watermarked) appended to the filename
    • Overwrite this file will modify the original file

Note: To add a watermark to a file, you must be the file owner.

How to remove a watermark

If you chose Overwrite this file when you added your watermark, you can remove the watermark from your file. To do so:

  1. Sign in to
  2. Open the preview of the file you want to remove a watermark from.
  3. Click the ... (ellipsis) icon.
  4. Click Version history.
  5. Select the version without the watermark to preview it.
  6. Click Restore.

Note: Only the file owner will be able to remove a watermark. A recipient of a watermarked file will not be able to remove the watermark.

Can I customize my watermark?

Watermarks are not currently customizable. A watermark will automatically be created from the file owner’s name and the date the watermark is applied.
