How to record your screen with Dropbox Capture

Dropbox Capture is currently in beta and is subject to additional terms.

With Dropbox Capture, you can record your screen, camera, and microphone at the same time. Using the Capture control panel, you are able to pause and resume, re-record, draw on, or delete your recordings.

Notes

  • Users can record up to 2 hours total with no limit on individual recordings.
  • Mac users will need to give Dropbox Capture access to screen recording, camera, and microphone through their System Preferences.

How to record with Dropbox Capture

To record only your screen:

  1. Open Dropbox Capture.
  2. Click Screen recording.
  3. Choose which part of your screen you’d like to capture:
    • Click once to record of your entire screen.
    • Click and drag to record a desired area of your screen.
    • Press the spacebar to record a specific window.
  4. Click the red circle icon in the side panel to start recording, click it again to stop recording.
    • Click the Pause icon in the side panel while recording to pause/resume recording.
    • Click the Draw icon in the side panel while recording to draw on your recording.

To record your screen and microphone:

  1. Open Dropbox Capture.
  2. Click Screen recording.
  3. Choose which part of your screen you’d like to capture:
    • Click once to record of your entire screen.
    • Click and drag to record a desired area of your screen.
    • Press the spacebar to record a specific window.
  4. Click the red circle icon in the left-side panel to start recording, click it again to stop recording.

Note: To mute your microphone, click the microphone icon in the side panel.

To record your screen, microphone, and camera:

  1. Open Dropbox Capture.
  2. Click Screen recording & camera.
  3. Choose which part of your screen you’d like to capture:
    • Click once to record of your entire screen.
    • Click and drag to record a desired area of your screen.

  4. Click the red circle icon in the left-side panel to start recording, click it again to stop recording.
    • Click the Pause icon in the side panel while recording to pause/resume recording.
    • Click the Draw icon in the side panel while recording to draw on your recording.

Note: You can click and drag the camera to move it around your screen before and during recording.

Note: To mute your microphone, click the microphone icon in the side panel.

To record your microphone:

  1. Open Dropbox Capture.
  2. Click Audio recording.
  3. Click the red circle icon in the left-side panel to start recording, click it again to stop recording.

To record your camera:

  1. Open Dropbox Capture.
  2. Click Camera.
  3. Click the red circle icon in the left-side panel to start recording, click it again to stop recording.
    • Click the Pause icon in the side panel while recording to pause/resume recording.
    • Click the Draw icon in the side panel while recording to draw on your recording.

Note: To mute your microphone, click the microphone icon in the side panel.

To record your screen as a GIF file:

Note: This feature is exclusive to Mac users and GIFs are limited to 30 seconds.

  1. Open Dropbox Capture.
  2. Click GIF.
  3. Choose which part of your screen you’d like to capture:
    • Click once to record of your entire screen.
    • Click and drag to record a desired area of your screen.
    • Press the spacebar to record a specific window.
  4. Click the red circle icon in the left-side panel to start recording, click it again to stop recording.
    • Click the Pause icon in the side panel while recording to pause/resume recording.
    • Click the Draw icon in the side panel while recording to draw on your recording.

A link to your recording will be copied to your clipboard and a copy of your recording will be saved to the Capture folder of your Dropbox account.

How to use an external microphone or camera

To use an external microphone or camera while recording, plug in the device and open the Preferences menu in Dropbox Capture. Then, select the device you want to use from the dropdown next to Camera and Microphone.

FAQs

My recording has no audio. What should I do?

If you’re having issues recording audio, try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Click “ (vertical ellipsis) in the top right corner, select Preferences, and make sure the correct recording device is selected under Microphone.
  • Close Dropbox Capture and reopen it.
  • Make sure Capture is up to date.
  • Make sure your microphone is not muted while recording.
    • The audio level over the microphone icon should be moving as you speak.

If you’re still unable to resolve the issue, contact customer support.

How do I change video resolution?

To change the recording resolution, click “” (vertical ellipsis) in the top right corner of your screen, select Preferences, and make a selection using the dropdown next to Video quality.

How do I edit videos created in Capture?

To edit videos made with Dropbox Capture, open the video and click Edit Video in the bottom-right of the screen. From here, you’ll be able to select specific parts of the video to be removed.

You can also open Capture app from the taskbar or menu bar, hover over a video, and click the scissors icon to edit.

How do I see who has viewed videos I’ve created in Dropbox Capture?

To see who have viewed your Capture video, open the video and click Viewers in the top-right of the screen. You will also be notified by email when someone views a video you created.

Email notifications can be turned off by opening Preferences in Capture and toggling off Get notified when someone views.

How do I know how much recording time I have left?

Your remaining recording time will appear at the top of the Capture app in the taskbar or menu bar. This time will appear after you record your first video. 

Deleting videos will remove their length from your recording time.

I was sent a Capture link via Slack. Can I play it in Slack?

Links shared via Slack will have the option to be played in Slack or opened in a new browser tab. To play in Slack, you'll need to follow the authentication prompts to connect with Capture.

To disconnect Slack from Capture, go to the Connected apps tab in your Dropbox account, click Dropbox Capture, then click Disconnect.

Note: This will disconnect any current Capture session(s). This means you’ll need to log back into Capture through your browser or the desktop app.
