How to edit and share recordings with Dropbox Capture

You can organize recordings made with Dropbox Capture into collections which can be shared via link. You can also edit and share individual recordings on capture.dropbox.com and the Dropbox Capture desktop app.

How to view and organize your captures

You can view your recordings made with Dropbox Capture through capture.dropbox.com and the Dropbox Capture desktop app in the taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac). You can also add multiple recordings into a collection. Collections can be shared via link or through a Dropbox team account.

When viewing or editing a Capture recording in your web browser, you can click Attach link in the right sidebar to add any relevant links to your project.

Comments can be left on captures through capture.dropbox.com by typing a note in the “Share your thoughts…” box below a recording and clicking Post. You’ll be notified by email when a comment is added to one of your recordings.

How to edit your Capture videos

You can select specific parts of your videos to be removed or trim the video to a desired length or segment.

To edit videos made with Dropbox Capture:

  1. Open the video through capture.dropbox.com.
  2. Click Edit video in the right sidebar of the screen. 
    • You can also open the Dropbox Capture desktop app from the taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac), hover over a video, and click the scissors icon to edit.
  3. Use the controls at the bottom of the window to select a portion of your video.
  4. Depending on what you’d like to do, click Keep selection or Delete selection.
  5. Click Save changes
    • You can click Cancel at any time to change your video back to its original state.

Once saved, edited videos will replace the original file.

Captures can be renamed by clicking the pencil icon to the right of the file name.

Note: Customers on Dropbox Basic, Plus, and Family plans can edit videos that are five minutes or less. Customers on Dropbox Professional, Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise can edit videos of any length.

How to share your captures

After you create a recording with Dropbox Capture, a link to it will be copied to your clipboard and a copy will be saved to the “Capture” folder of your Dropbox account.

To share recordings from capture.dropbox.com:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com
  2. Go to capture.dropbox.com.
  3. Open the recording you’d like to share.
  4. Select viewer permissions from the dropdown menu near the top-right of your screen 
    • Permission options will be Anyone with link, Team members, or Only me.
  5. Click the blue Copy link button in the top-right corner of your screen.
  6. Share the link to your recording.

To share recordings from the Dropbox Capture desktop app:

  1. Open the Dropbox Capture desktop app.
  2. Hover over the recent recording you’d like to share.
  3. Click the Copy link icon.
  4. Share the link to your recording.

If you share a Dropbox Capture link via Slack, the viewer can choose between watching the recording in Slack or opening it in a new browser tab. If they’d like to watch Capture recordings in Slack, they’ll need to follow the authentication prompts to connect Slack with Dropbox Capture.

To disconnect Slack from Capture:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner.
  3. Click the Connected apps tab.
  4. Click Dropbox Capture.
  5. Click Disconnect.

Note: This will disconnect any current Capture session(s). This means you’ll need to log back into Capture through your browser or the desktop app.

How to see who has viewed your recordings

You can see who has viewed videos you’ve created with Dropbox Capture.

To do so:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Go to capture.dropbox.com.
  3. Open a recording.
  4. Click the viewed button near the top-right of your screen.

You’ll also be notified by email when someone views a video you created.

Note: You can turn off email notifications by opening Preferences in the Dropbox Capture desktop app and setting the Get notified when someone views toggle to off.

Capture for teams 

My Teams is a shared space for Dropbox teams. You can create folders where team members can collaborate to manage captures, add comments, and automatically be notified of any changes. 

Once you create a team collection, just add a capture and everyone associated with the collection will automatically be notified.

To create a new collection

To create a new collection:

  1. Sign in to Dropbox Capture. 
  2. Click Create Collection next to Team collections. 
  3. Enter the name you wish to title the folder and click check mark. 

To delete a collection

To delete a collection:

  1. Sign in to Dropbox Capture. 
  2. Scroll to the folder you wish to delete. 
  3. Hover over the folder name and click “”.
  4. Click Delete
  5. Click Delete again to confirm. 

To allow or block use of Dropbox Capture for your team

To allow or block use of Dropbox Capture for your team:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com using your admin credentials.
  2. Click Admin console.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Under Apps, click App permissions.
  5. Search for “Dropbox Capture" in the search bar.
  6. Check the box next to Dropbox Capture in the list.
  7. Allow or block the use of Dropbox Capture:
    • Click the blue Allow button to allow use of Dropbox Capture.
    • Click the white Block button to block use of Dropbox Capture.

To enable/disable captions for videos

When you choose to enable or disable captions, it’ll affect all Dropbox Capture videos. To do so: 

  1. Open Dropbox Capture desktop app.
  2. Click the “”(vertical ellipsis) in the top-right. 
  3. Click Preferences. 
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Toggle Generate closed captions on/off. 

Note: If you’re on a Dropbox team account and you don’t see the Generate closed captions setting, your admin has disabled captions.
