How to filter Dropbox files and folders

Filter in the Files tab

You can filter and sort your files and folders on by clicking the column headers:

  1. Sign in to
  2. Click Files.
  3. Select a column header and choose a sort option:
  • To sort alphabetically by file or folder name, click Name
  • The second and third columns contain a few different options:
    • Members: Sort by how many people your file or folder is shared with
    • Type: Group by files, documents, folders, shared folders, images, and more
    • Extension: Sort by file extensions like .xslx, .docx, .pdf, .png, .jpg, and more
    • Size: Sort by the size of your files
    • Modified: Sort by the date a file was last changed
  • The fourth column allows you to view your files as a list or as a grid

You can also choose to sort columns in ascending or descending order.

Note: The second and third column options won't repeat. For example, if you choose Type in the second column, this option is unavailable in the third column.

Display the size of a folder on

To display the size of a folder on

  1. Sign in to
  2. Click Files.
  3. Click a column header and select Size.
  4. Hover over the folder and click the check box next the folder you’re interested in.
  5. Click "" (ellipsis) under the details pane in the right sidebar, and click Calculate Size.
  6. Wait for the size to be calculated. The folder size displays in the Size column next to the folder once the calculation is done.

Filter in the Deleted files tab

The Deleted files page shows you files and folders that were deleted from your Dropbox account. You can view and filter your deleted files on

  1. Sign in to
  2. Click Files.
  3. Click Deleted files.
  4. Use the dropdowns to sort by:
    • Date range
    • Type in an email address to sort by the person who deleted the file
    • Once you select a person, you can choose the device the file was deleted from*
    • Location in your Dropbox account

If no files or folder were deleted in the filter selected, no results will be displayed.

Note: *“Device” only shows devices linked to your Dropbox account unless you’re a member of a Dropbox Business team. If you’re a member of a Dropbox Business team, you can also see the devices linked to accounts of other members on your team.

Sometimes deletions are grouped into events. Events looks like: “Filename and X more files." You can click an event to see the full list of deleted files and folders.
