Using Slack in Dropbox

The Slack integration allows you to share files and message people in Slack directly from a file in Dropbox. 

You can see who shared your file in Slack, when they shared it, and what channels they shared it in. This information will appear in the Activity section of your file’s preview

Connect Slack to your Dropbox account

To connect Slack to your Dropbox account:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your profile picture (or grey circle) in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click the Connected apps tab.
  5. Next to Slack, click Connect to Slack and follow the prompts.

You can also connect from Slack by adding The Dropbox app to your workspace.

Share files in Slack from Dropbox

To share a Dropbox file in Slack on dropbox.com:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Hover over any file and click the downward-facing arrow next to Share.
  3. Click Share in Slack
  4. Click Send next to the channel you'd like to share it in, or the person you'd like to share it with.

A link to the file will appear in the Slack channel you chose or in a direct message to the person you sent it to.

Message people in Slack from Dropbox

You can message someone you're sharing a file with in Slack directly from a Dropbox file preview. To do so on dropbox.com:

  1. At the top of the file preview, click the profile picture or initials of the person you'd like to message.
  2. Click the area that says Message on Slack and type your message.
    • If you don’t see Message on Slack, click the downward-facing arrow and click Slack
  3. Click Send.

You can also click the downward-arrow and Slack to share the file in a direct message with that person.

Disconnect Slack from your Dropbox account 

To disconnect Slack from your Dropbox account:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your profile picture (or grey circle) in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click the Connected apps tab.
  5. Next to Slack, click Disconnect.
