How to restrict access to a folder

If you create a folder inside a team folder, the new folder will automatically have the same members as its containing folder. However, if you don't want certain people to access this new folder, you can restrict access to it.

Notes:

  • You can only restrict access to folders that are inside a team folder.
  • You can't create a shared link for a restricted folder.
  • This functionality is only available to Dropbox Business teams.

On dropbox.com

To restrict access to a folder:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click All files in the left sidebar.
  3. Hover over the name of the folder and click the share icon (person).
  4. Click [x] people have access.
  5. Click the dropdown next to the name of the group or individual you want to remove.
  6. Click Remove.

In the Dropbox desktop app

To restrict access to a folder:

  1. Right-click the shared folder.
  2. Click Share…
  3. Click the dropdown next to the name of the group or individual you want to remove.
  4. Click Remove.

On the Dropbox mobile app

To restrict access to a folder:

  1. Open the Dropbox mobile app.
  2. Tap the “⁝” (vertical ellipsis on Android) “” (ellipsis on iPhone/iPad) next to the file or folder you’d like to restrict.
  3. Tap Share.
  4. Tap Folder settings.
  5. Tap the area below [x] members.
  6. Tap the group or member you’d like to remove.
  7. Tap Remove access.

From the admin console

If you are a team admin, you can access all team folders using the admin console, even if you’re not a member of the folder. To restrict access to a folder using the admin console:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com with your admin credentials.
  2. Click Admin console.
  3. Click Content.
  4. Navigate to the folder you want to edit.
  5. Hover over the name of that folder and click Manage.
  6. Click the dropdown next to the name of the group or individual you want to remove.
  7. Click Remove.

Once you’ve restricted access to a folder, any new members added to the containing folder won’t have access to that folder. Members who do not have access will see the name of the folder and a minus icon as shown below, but they won’t be able to open the folder.

Note: It’s not possible to fully hide the folder from these members.
