Manage Dropbox account settings

This article discusses how to manage account-wide settings on dropbox.com. Account settings do not include device-specific preferences for the Dropbox desktop app.

Learn how to manage desktop app preferences.

Your Dropbox account settings are managed online and apply to every browser and device you use with Dropbox. Your options may vary depending on your plan, but include:

  • Profile and preferences
  • Plans and billing
  • Passwords, devices, and security
  • Notifications, connected apps, and plan-specific features

How to access your account settings

To access your Dropbox account settings:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Settings. To access different types of settings, click the tabs along the top of the page. Learn more about the different tabs and settings below.

Note: Admins on Dropbox Business teams can manage team-wide settings in the admin console.

Sections in this article:

General

Basics
Add or update your profile picture, name, and email address. If you’re on a Dropbox Plus, Family, Professional, or Business plan, you may also have options to add a secondary email and link your work and personal accounts.

Info about where you work
If you’re a member of a Dropbox Business team, you can add your job title and the name and size of your organization.

Preferences
Set your language, date, and time preferences, and choose whether to be included in early releases for Dropbox features. You can also clear manually added contacts, and enable the Dropbox system extension and the Smart Sync update for Mac.

Features
If you’re on a Dropbox Plus, Family, Professional, or Business plan, you may have options to enable or open certain features, like Dropbox Passwords and Dropbox Vault.

Delete account
If you’re on a Dropbox Basic, Plus, Family, or Professional plan, you can delete your Dropbox account. Deleting your Dropbox account deletes all of your data from dropbox.com and unlinks your devices from Dropbox. Deleting your Dropbox account can't be undone.
Note: If you’re on a Dropbox Business team, you’ll need to contact your admin to delete your account.

Plan

See your current plan and available upgrade options. You can also check your available storage space, and if you’re on a Basic, Plus, Family, or Professional plan, you can find out how to earn free space.

Billing

If you’re on a Dropbox Plus or Professional plan, or the manager of a Family plan, you can manage your payment method and billing frequency, and view invoices and receipts. Admins on Dropbox Business teams can access billing information from their admin console, depending on their admin role.

Family

If you’re a member of a Dropbox Family plan, you can view a list of all the members on your plan. Family plan managers can also invite and remove plan members.

Security

Security checkup
Run the security checkup tool to review your email address, connected apps and devices, and password. If you have two-step verification enabled (see below), you can also check the authenticator apps, phone numbers, or security keys associated with your account.

Password
Change your password regularly to keep your account secure. If you forget your password, you can also reset it from the forgot password page or by clicking Forgot your password? when you sign in to dropbox.com.

Two-step verification
Set up and manage two-step verification, to add an extra layer of security to your account. Two-step verification requires you to enter a security key or code, in addition to your password, when you sign in to Dropbox. Once you’ve followed the steps to enable two-step verification, you’ll have options to change your verification methods, access recovery codes, add a physical security key, and revoke trusted status from linked devices.
Note: If you’re a member of Dropbox Business team, your admin may require two-step verification.

Web browsers
Find out what browsers are currently signed in to your Dropbox account, from where, and when they were last active. You can sign out of recent sessions by clicking “X next to the time of activity.

Devices
See what devices are linked to your Dropbox account, their location, and when they were last active. Click “X” next to a device to unlink it from your account if you’re no longer using it. When you unlink a device, you’ll be signed out of your Dropbox account on that device, and files and folders on the device will not sync with changes made on dropbox.com or other linked devices.

Paper mobile devices
Unlink all devices that are signed in to the Dropbox Paper app. Paper docs and folders are stored online, so unlinking devices won’t affect how they’re updated. You’ll need to sign back in to the Paper app when you’re ready to use it.

Mobile contacts
If you’ve allowed the Dropbox mobile app for iOS or Android to access your contacts, you can remove them from the suggested contacts in your account.

Notifications

Choose what email notifications you’d like to receive from Dropbox. You can opt in or out of notifications about file and account activity, as well as news and updates from Dropbox.
Note: These settings only apply to email notifications. Find out how to manage notifications on your desktop or mobile device, or turn off comment notifications for specific files.

Connected apps

Manage the third-party apps that you’ve connected to your Dropbox account, as well as apps you’ve allowed to access and edit content stored in your Dropbox account. If you’re a member of a Dropbox Business team, your admin may manage some apps for your entire team.

Default apps

Choose how you’d like to open certain types of files from your Dropbox account, like Microsoft Office files and Paper docs.

Branding

If you’re a Dropbox Professional customer, you can use branded sharing to display your logo and the name of your brand when sharing files and folders with clients.
