My computer is no longer supported. What should I do?

We regularly release new versions of the Dropbox desktop app with additional features, better performance, and enhanced security. These versions are not always compatible with older operating systems. Periodically, we'll end support of the Dropbox desktop app for these operating systems. If you're running an older version of an operating system, you may receive an email notification from Dropbox explaining that it's no longer supported.

Learn more about which operating systems Dropbox supports for your device.

To learn which version of an operating system your computer has:

  1. Visit the Dropbox account page.
  2. Scroll to Devices and find the device you’d like to learn more about.
  3. Under Most recent activity, hover over the "i" (lowercase i) icon to find the operating system of your device.

What happens to my Dropbox account when the operating system on my computer is no longer supported?

When an operating system is no longer supported:

  •  Your files remain safe in your Dropbox account.
  • The Dropbox desktop app stops syncing changes to your files and folders.
  • You're signed out of the Dropbox desktop app on the computer that’s no longer supported.

How do I update my operating system?

To continue using the Dropbox desktop app on your computer after support has ended for its operating system, you need to update your operating system to a supported version.

If this doesn't work, check that your hard drive is in one of the formats that Dropbox supports.
  • Windows: You must have an NTFS-formatted hard drive.
  • macOS: You must have a HFS+ or APFS-formatted hard drive with extended attributes not disabled.
  • Linux: You must have a hard drive or partition formatted with one these file system types.
    • ext4
    • zfs (on 64-bit systems only)
    • eCryptFS (back by ext4)
    • xfs (on 64-bit systems only)
    • btrfs

If you're on Windows, check that Dropbox isn't running in compatibility mode.
