To comply with legal regulations, Dropbox users must meet different minimum age requirements.

The age requirements to use Dropbox vary by location.

  • If you’re in the United States: You must be 13 or older.
  • If you’re outside the United States: You must be 16 or older.

Notes:

  • Depending on where you live, there may be laws or regulations that require you to be older for Dropbox to legally provide services to you without parental consent. In those cases, you must be that age.
  • The Dropbox mobile app follows age-related requirements from app stores. If you’re under the minimum required age, or a teen who needs parental approval, the Dropbox mobile app may be unavailable. Learn more about the age requirements for the Dropbox mobile app.

Once you reach the required age in your location, you can create a new Dropbox account. Learn how to create and set up a Dropbox account.

What happens if I don’t meet the age requirement?

If you’re under the minimum age required to use Dropbox, your account may be scheduled for deletion. You’ll be notified 48 hours in advance, and you’ll be prompted to download all your content before it’s permanently deleted. During the grace period you’ll be able to download your content from dropbox.com or the Dropbox desktop app.

After 48 hours, you’ll be logged out of all Dropbox apps and you won’t be able to log in again. Your account will be deleted in accordance with our retention policy.

Why your access to the Dropbox mobile app may be disabled

Dropbox uses age and parental-approval information provided by the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This information helps us follow our Terms of Service and comply with laws designed to protect minors.

Your access to the Dropbox mobile app may be disabled for the following reasons:

  • You’re under the minimum age required to use Dropbox: If you’re under 13 years old in the United States, or under the applicable age limit in your region, you’ll lose access to the Dropbox mobile app. You’ll be notified that your account will be deleted and you’ll have a limited amount of time to download your content from dropbox.com or from the Dropbox desktop app before permanent deletion.
  • You’re between 13–17 years old and need parental approval: If you’re between ages 13–17, you may need approval from a parent or guardian to continue using the Dropbox mobile app. If you don’t have parental approval, your access to the Dropbox mobile app will be disabled temporarily. You’ll be notified that parental approval is required, and once it’s granted, your access will be restored.
  • Your parental approval request was denied: If your parent or guardian denies approval, your access to the Dropbox mobile app will be disabled.

What happens if I’m a Family plan manager?

If you’re a Dropbox Family plan manager that doesn’t meet the age requirement:

  1. The plan will be disabled after 48 hours.
  2. Everyone of age on the account will be downgraded to a free Dropbox Basic account.
  3. After 48 hours, you’ll be logged out of all Dropbox apps. You won’t be able to log in again.
  4. Your account will be deleted in accordance with our retention policy.

What if I already paid for a subscription?

If you’ve paid for your subscription through Dropbox:

  • The remainder of your subscription term will be refunded to your original form of payment.

If you purchased your subscription from the Apple App Store:

What if my access was accidentally disabled

You may have been assigned to the wrong age category, for example if you entered your date of birth incorrectly, or if a parent was signed in on a child’s device:

  1. Contact Dropbox support within 30 days to have your account reactivated.
  2. Our support team will ask you to provide proof of your date of birth.
  3. After your information is verified, you’ll be notified through email when your account has been reactivated.
